Assessment requirements of Coach

UNIT 1. - Candidates shooting with their own equipment demonstrate a technique suitable as a model for others
Discuss the technique demonstrated.
Explain how the: - •  Bow length was determined
  •  Bow weight was determined
  •  Arrow specification was determined
Discuss: - •  Arrows, fletchings, nocks and piles
  •  Pressure button
  •  Stabiliser system
  •  String
  •  Tuning
  •  Aiming system (sight, scope, peep sight etc.)
  •  Draw length check

 

UNIT 2.
Demonstration.
Using basic beginners' equipment shoot Olympic/Freestyle and Barebow techniques demonstrate: - •  Position and stance
•  Holding the bow.
•  Nocking the arrow, finger position on the string and preparation position
•  Adopting a shooting posture and addressing the target.
•  Raising the bow and maintaining posture.
•  Bow arm and shoulder, drawing arm and shoulder positioning prior to the draw.
•  Arms, hands, shoulders and muscle usage during the draw.
•  Maintenance of posture during the draw.
•  Reference point and Eye, Sight, Arrow Relationship.
•  Loose and follow through.
Analysing.  
Analyse the demonstrations of other candidates using beginners' basic equipment and shooting Olympic/Freestyle and Barebow techniques. For each candidate observed, note and correct as necessary: - •  Position and stance.
•  Holding the bow.
•  Nocking the arrow, finger position on the string and preparation position.
•  Adopting a shooting posture and addressing the target.
•  Raising the bow and maintaining posture.
•  Bow arm and shoulder, drawing arm and shoulder positioning prior to the draw.
•  Arms, hands, shoulders and muscle usage during the draw.
•  Maintenance of posture during the draw.
•  Reference point and Eye, Sight, Arrow Relationship.
•  Loose and follow through.
Teaching.  
Demonstrate the ability to: - •  Instruct a beginner in the safety aspects of shooting.
  •  Determine whether a beginner should shoot left or right handed.
  •  Equip a beginner for shooting.
  •  Teach bracing and unbracing a bow.
  •  Teach basic methods of Olympic/Freestyle and Barebow shooting, instructing on:-
    •  Position and stance.
    •  Holding the bow.
  •  Nocking the arrow, finger position on the string and preparation position.
    •  Adopting a shooting posture and addressing the target.
    •  Raising the bow and maintaining posture.
  •  Bow arm and shoulder, drawing arm and shoulder positioning prior to the draw.
    •  Arms, hands, shoulders and muscle usage during the draw.
    •  Maintenance of posture during the draw.
    •  Reference point and Eye, Sight, Arrow Relationship.
    •  Aiming systems and the use of sights.
    •  Loose and follow through.
  •  Teach the approach to the target, scoring and retrieval of arrows.
  •  Control a group of beginners.

 

UNIT 3.    
Using beginners equipment discuss or demonstrate:­ •  Bows •  Types, length and draw weight.
  •  Setting up.
  •  Arrow rests.
•  Strings •  String and serving materials.
  •  Making, maintenance and repair.
  •  fitting nocking point.
•  Simple sights  
•  Arrows •  Types, length, material and cost.
  •  Checking, maintenance and straightening.
  •  Piles and nocks; types, fitting and adhesives.
  •  Fletchings; types, fitting and adhesives.
•  Bracers  
•  Tabs •  Materials and fitting
For personal equipment:­ •  Specify suitable bow length and draw weight.
•  Demonstrate the ability to initially set up bows prior to tuning and select suitable arrows.
•  Using appropriate tests, demonstrate the ability to select arrows of the best specification and systematically set:­ •  Bracing height.
•  Nocking point.
•  Pressure button position and spring tension.
•  Demonstrate the ability to set up and coarse tune a recurve bow which is to be shot bare with the archer using:- •  A fixed finger position on the string.
•  A string walking technique.
•  For Olympic /Freestyle demonstrate the ability to advise on:- •  Stabilisers.
•  Select and set a draw length check.
•  For Compound bows demonstrate the ability to advise on:- •  Sights and scopes.
•  Peep sights.
•  Arrow launchers.
•  Release aids.

 

UNIT 4. - For each archer observed, note and describe:-

  •  Position and stance.
  •  Holding the bow.
  •  Nocking the arrow, finger position on the string and the preparation position.
  •  Adopting the shooting position and addressing the target.
  •  Raising the bow and maintaining posture.
  •  Bow arm and shoulder, drawing arm and shoulder positioning prior to the draw.
  •  Arms, hands, shoulders and muscle usage during the draw.
  •  Maintenance of posture during the draw.
  •  Reference point and Eye, Sight, Arrow Relationship.
  •  Aiming and the use of sights.
  •  How the loose and follow through are effected.
  •  Use of draw length check if applicable.
  •  Level of concentration and control.
  •  Point of commitment to the shot.
  •  Mental approach to shooting.
  •  Physical characteristics of the archer and appropriateness of technique.
  •  Variations of technique.
  •  Variations in mental approach; between shots and ends.
  •  Variations in concentration; between shots and ends.
  •  Arrow pattern in the target and variations between ends.
For each archer observed design a suitable coaching programme including the following where appropriate:­
  For the improvement of:-
    •  Skill level.
    •  Muscle tone.
    •  Mental approach, concentration and relaxation.

 

UNIT 5.
Indicate the location of the muscles used in:- •  Raising the bow )
•  Bending and straightening the fingers ) and their antagonists.
•  Drawing a bow )
Demonstrate an appropriate position immediately prior to the draw for the •  Bow arm
•  Drawing arm.
•  Bow arm shoulder blade
•  Drawing arm shoulder blade.
Demonstrate an understanding of posture in relation to archery.
Demonstrate an understanding of the correct use of the string fingers and their associated muscle groups.
Explain the purpose of warming up prior to a sporting activity.
Demonstrate a warm up/loosen up procedure suitable for archers.
Demonstrate and explain the purpose of exercises suitable for archers.
Explain Eye, Sight, Arrow Relationship and relate to a chin and side of face draw reference points.
Explain the dangers of bone end loading in growing children.
Explain the roll of glycogen in muscle activity and sources of glycogen in the diet.
Explain the effects of lactic acid accumulations on muscle activity.
